Advanced Oral Surgery Techniques in Winchester, VA

Winchester Oral Surgery Center is built around the kind of surgical infrastructure that makes referrals straightforward. Three board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, in-house CT imaging, and full IV sedation capability give patients access to a broad spectrum of advanced oral surgery techniques under one roof, without the delays that come from fragmented referral pathways.

What Advanced Techniques Are Available to Our Patients

Our surgical team manages cases across the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, from routine dentoalveolar procedures (tooth and bone surgeries in the mouth) to complex reconstructive work. The technology and credentialing behind that scope are described below.

In-House Imaging and Surgical Planning Technology

Every patient referred to our practice has access to in-house cone beam CT and panoramic imaging. See the full details on our Advanced Technology page.

Planning from three-dimensional imaging means our surgeons can identify anatomic considerations, assess bone volume, and map implant trajectories before the patient enters the operatory. There is no wait for outside imaging reports. Cases move faster, and surgical plans are grounded in complete diagnostic data from the start.

IV Sedation and Anesthesia Capabilities

All three surgeons are trained to administer IV sedation and general anesthesia in-office. Our sedation protocols are managed at a hospital-equivalent level of monitoring and documentation, consistent with the team's residency training and ongoing hospital affiliation.

For patients who arrive anxious or medically complex, this matters. Referring a patient to a practice with in-house anesthesia capability means they receive surgical care and sedation from the same credentialed team, in a single appointment, without coordination across separate providers.

CO2 Laser

Our office uses a CO2 laser, a surgical laser that directs a focused beam of light to remove or reshape soft tissue, such as the gums, cheeks, or tongue, with precision. As it works, the laser seals small blood vessels, which can help keep bleeding to a minimum during certain soft tissue procedures.

The CO2 laser is one of several tools our surgeons can choose from. Whether it is the right fit for your procedure depends on your specific needs, and your surgeon will discuss it with you at your consultation.

Implant, Grafting, and Complex Dentoalveolar Procedures

Our implant and grafting case load spans:

  • Single-tooth and full-arch implant placement
  • Same-day implant protocols
  • Ceramic and zirconia implant options
  • Ridge augmentation and socket preservation (rebuilding the jaw ridge and protecting the socket after a tooth is removed, so the bone stays healthy for an implant)
  • Sinus lift procedures, both lateral (through the side of the sinus) and crestal (through the implant site) approaches
  • Alveolar bone grafting for implant site development (adding bone to the jaw where a tooth was lost, so an implant has a solid foundation)
  • Soft tissue grafting
  • Expose and bond for impacted teeth
  • Frenectomy and apicoectomy (a minor procedure to treat infection at the root tip of a tooth)

Each procedure is planned using in-house imaging and performed by board-certified surgeons trained under Dr. Robert Marx, a recognized authority in reconstructive oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Orthognathic Surgery, Trauma, and Pathology

Complex referrals are a core part of what we do. Dr. Vincent Coviello serves as Director of Facial Trauma at Winchester Medical Center, and our team manages orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, facial trauma, head and neck pathology, head and neck infections, TMJ surgery, obstructive sleep apnea treatment, and nerve repair cases regularly.

Hospital affiliation provides continuity for patients who require inpatient care or post-operative management beyond an outpatient setting. When a case escalates, our team has the credentials and access to manage it.

Why Board-Certified Surgeons Make the Difference for Your Practice

Board certification in oral and maxillofacial surgery requires residency training beyond dental school, written and oral examination, and ongoing continuing education. All three surgeons at this practice carry that credential.

Beyond certification, the training lineage here is specific. Two of our surgeons trained under Dr. Robert Marx, and the practice hosts chief resident rotations from Howard University. That academic connection reflects a standard of surgical rigor that carries into everyday clinical work. When you send a patient here, the procedure is being performed by surgeons who were held to a high bar in training and who continue to operate at that level.

Frequently Asked Questions from Referring Dentists

What imaging does the practice have on-site?

Winchester Oral Surgery Center has in-house CT (cone beam) imaging and panoramic X-ray capability. This allows our surgeons to complete full three-dimensional surgical planning without sending your patient to an outside imaging center, reducing delays between consultation and procedure.

How does in-office technology make my treatment easier?

Because our cone beam CT and panoramic imaging are in-house, your surgeon can review three-dimensional images of your jaw at the same visit instead of sending you to an outside imaging center. Treatment is planned from those images before surgery begins, and with in-office IV sedation, most procedures can be completed here in a single appointment. You can learn more on our Advanced Technology page.

Do you accept medical and dental insurance for patients?

Yes. We accept both medical and dental insurance, including major PPO plans such as Aetna, Anthem/BCBS/CareFirst, Cigna, Delta, MetLife, United Concordia, and Tricare. We also accept pediatric WV Medicaid/CHIP plans. Patients with Workers' Compensation cases are welcome with prior authorization.
